Well, I finally got around to building the window screens that were missing when we bought the house. I have to make about 9 of them. This is a fairly simple project, but it requires a little preparation and good measuring.

1st- measure the window openings where the screens will sit.

    • a large number of mine are 55" x 27.5" ; however, there are some casement windows which are oddly sized.

2nd- figure out what size lumber you will be using to build the frames.

    • I decided to use 1x2 furring strips, as that's what the house had previously. I also got the flat mounding trim as well.

3rd- Paint the furring strips and trip before you assemble the window, this   is important because it's a real pain-in-the-a$$ to paint hem once assembled.

    4th- cutting and assembley.

    • Cut some 1x2's to the required lengths and lay them out on the floor.
    • Then, grab your corrugated nails and fasten the corners together. (I chose to not go with mitred corners on the frames because I suck at mitre cuts. I did however choose to mitre the mounding. )

    • test fit the frames to be sure they fit properly in the windows.
    • Next, get your screen that's the proper width and lay it over your frame. Staple it in place. You only need a few at the corners, just enough to hold it tightly in place.
    • Finally, grab that moulding you cut and lay it in place. Begin nailing n the corner of one side and slowly work your way down, tightening the screen as you go. Repeat for all four sides....

5th- Mounting of hardware / Installation

Mount whatever hardware you need to hang the screens. I used sash/screen hangers which I got from ACE hardware here in Loveland.

    Install and be happy :-)
